The recent movie release The Proposal is described as belonging to the genre designated “comedy and kids/family”. But in my opinion, this isn’t exactly a movie for kids—unless they’re over 13, unusually mature, and have the sense to turn to a trusted adult if the film leaves them with questions.

In this romantic comedy romp, Margaret (Sandra Bullock), a hard-nosed book editor, faces deportation from the U. S. to her native Canada. But her supervisor suggests a solution: an engagement of convenience to her assistant, Andrew (Ryan Reynolds), who has borne the brunt of Margaret’s slave-driver ways for years.

Although there’s no love lost between the two, Andrew agrees to the pretense, with conditions. The fun begins when Margaret goes with Andrew to Sitka, Alaska, to meet his quirky family. Suddenly out of her element, the self-possessed editor finds herself in one screwy mess after another. The situation is complicated by the prospect of an impromptu wedding engineered by Andrew’s folks and an emigration official who’s determined to expose the whole thing.

Although the acting is good and many of the situations keep the story interesting, the plot is as predictable as a sunrise. Sexual content, nudity and language earned The Proposal a PG-13 rating. But it’s fun—if you don’t bring young kids along.
