Henderson’s KC Club holds Relay for Life drive

Story and photo submitted by Sherry Clemens

During the week of May 18-22, 2009, the Henderson Elementary Kindness and Compassion Club rose up to Rachel’s Challenge by participating in daily activities to raise money for their Relay for Life team, Rachel’s Runners.

The Henderson family really pulled together and raised over $5,860 to help find a cure for cancer! “Un-tuck for a Buck” was our activity on Monday, where students brought one dollar to un-tuck their shirts for the day. Tuesday’s “Slip into Finding a Cure and Flip Over the Possibilities” was a big hit. Students brought a dollar to wear slippers or flip flops all day! On Wednesday, students brought $3 for a non-uniform day. On Thursday, students brought in loose change and bills for a “Boys vs. Girls” contest. The boys pulled out ahead and raised over $1,437! The girls were close with a total of $1,193.

The Relay for Life Drive wrapped up on Friday with “Don’t Find Yourself in a Pickle by Not Helping to Find a Cure” day. Students brought $1 to purchase a pickle on Field Day. The top homeroom class that donated the most overall money was Ashley Skidmore’s class (3D) with $308.69. The top homeroom classes for each grade level were Sherrie Koerner’s class (KA) with $197; Lori Goldston’s class (1B) with $223; Colleen Brashier’s class (2C) with $265, Misty Pate’s homeroom (4A) with $221; Elizabeth Hershberger’s homeroom (5C) with $307; and Catherine Luecke’s class (6A) with $252.
