FORNEY – The Forney Independent School District (FISD), in association with The American Heart Association, will host a three mile Heart Walk on Saturday, Feb. 13 at Forney Community Park located at 241 S. FM 548. Registration begins at 7:45 a.m. and the walk starts at 8:30 a.m. The cost is $13 per person and includes a t-shirt or $5 to walk and a “Go Red” pin. Proceeds from the Heart Walk go to benefit the American Heart Association.

February is Heart Disease Awareness Month and Forney ISD, with the support of the American Heart Association, has implemented a number of programs and events to help raise awareness to the number one killer of both men and women. Throughout the month the American Heart Association will coordinate events at various campuses and district wide to help FISD employees gain knowledge and information about nutrition, physical activity and other heart health related information.

During the first week of the month, district employees focused their attention on nutrition including how to read food labels, find heart healthy recipes and even tips on how to eat healthy when dining out. The second week of the month involved helping employees focus on physical activity which culminates with the Heart Walk on Saturday, Feb. 13. During the week of Feb. 15, employees will learn the risk factors and warnings signs of a heart attack and during the week of Feb. 22, employees will celebrate and share personal stories of heart healthy living.

This is the first year for the Heart Walk and organizers anticipate anywhere from 100-200 people will participate in the event.

Santa Cop delivered a turkey or ham with a box of additional food, toys and clothing for each child in the home. Ages ranged from infant to 18. All school age children are enrolled in Forney school. Santa Cop delivered to 46 families with 108 children.

The Forney Lions Club, through its Angel Tree Program, and Brookshire’s through its “Spirit of Christmas” food drive will once again partner to assist families who live in the Forney Independent School District and who need help this year with Christmas gifts for the children and food for the families.

To qualify for assistance, families are invited to apply at one of two signup events instead of by telephone as in years past. No signups will be taken by telephone. In order to help the greatest number of children, the Forney Lions Club has established the following qualifications: (1) The person signing up the children must be a parent or legal guardian and show a photo ID. (2) The children must live in the Forney Independent School District with the parent or legal guardian. (3) Families receiving assistance for Christmas gifts from other agencies are ineligible.

The events will be held on:
Wednesday, November 18 from 5:00 p.m. until 8 p.m. in the cafeteria of Johnson Elementary School located at 701 S. Bois d’Arc.
Saturday, November 21 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the cafeteria of Johnson Elementary School located at 701 S. Bois d’Arc.

At the Forney Hometown Christmas on December 5 the Lions Club will set up an Angel Christmas Tree in front of the Sub-Courthouse on Main Street. The community is invited to stop by and adopt one or more of the angels.

Again this year the annual Scare Crow Festival seemed a huge success. Thanks for joining us! The Kaufman County Sheriff’s office had a fun filled day connecting with Kaufman County’s citizens. Each year Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office employees look forward to this annual festival, not only for the good food and events, but to interact with our community in taking steps to stay safe and healthy.

Manning this year’s booth were Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Broocke Hammer and Sergeant Deonna Kirkpatrick, as well as Pat Brown, and Claudine Gammon.

There was something for everyone and the goodies included a whole host of things. Stranger Danger coloring books, Frisbees, as well as Senior Safe Information were among the items provided. A Pamphlet explaining drug safety education was provided by the National Drug & Safety League. There was also an informational guide on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, as well as a leaflet on use of drugs and the signs, and descriptions of various drugs.

Continuing with the motto “Together we can make a difference”, we look forward to seeing you next year.

The Smith Family Christmas in October will benefit Laurren Smith, a courageous young Forney girl that has been battling cancer for two years. Despite disappointing news from the doctors, Laurren is continuing to fight, now utilizing alternative treatments to keep the cancer from continuing to spread. Her upbeat attitude and amazing strength has inspired us here at 20PM, and several members began to discuss what we can do to help.

Just a few short weeks later, plans are underway for a spectacular “Christmas is October” for Laurren and her entire family. Not only will the event be a very special memory for the family, but it will raise money for the expensive medical treatments Laurren is currently undergoing that are not covered by insurance.

The Smith Family Christmas in October will be held on Oct. 25th from 5-8pm at the Forney Community Park.
