Story by L. Morrill, Forney Messenger Sports and Karry Hartwick

Lawson Hartwick, son of Larry and Kristi Hartwick of Forney, played for the North squad on Saturday, June 13th in the 60th annual GreenBelt Bowl All Star Football Classic at Bobcat Stadium in Childress, Texas.

The late W.T. Nelson is credited with founding the bowl game with the concept being to create an opportunity for and to provide exposure of talented football players in Texas. To date, over 3,075 players have competed in the GreenBelt Bowl, with many of those participants receiving college scholarships.

The GreenBelt Bowl has a rich tradition. Some of the coaches who have coached in the game are Darrell Royal of the University of Texas, Grant Teaff of Baylor University, and Bud Wilkinson of the University of Oklahoma.

Lawson, who has committed to Kansas Wesleyan University, was a starter at Defensive Tackle and Deep Snapper in the game. Lawson was the only Forney player in this year’s Bowl line up.

During his Forney football career, Lawson was a 3-year starter for the Jackrabbits. In his junior and senior years, Lawson was an All District Defensive Lineman and he was named to the All State Academic Team.

Coaches for the 2009 North squad  were Head Coach  Dave Dallas,  Ryan Mills, Courtney Farrell, Drew Dallas, Travis Calloway, and Preston McCorkle, all coaches at Kansas Wesleyan University.

The Childress Rotary Club sponsors this annual event.
