"Spy Store" Downtown
« on: July 16, 2009, 07:34:22 am »
Yesterday we stopped in at the Home Spy store in downtown Forney.  It's not just surveillance cameras and alarms.  They have a lot of interesting things in there.

In one of the other threads people were discussing taking self-defense classes and carrying a kubotan.  At the 'spy store' they have other self defense options, like a small flashlight that is also a taser gun.  Since I am going to be in Dallas and environs during hours of darkness on a monthly basis I will probably get one of these.  If someone approaches me in a threatening manner they would be surprised that the seemingly innocuous flashlight is really a taser gun and there is no mistaking that ominous crackling sound emitted by a taser.  Hopefully that  sound would scare them off and I would have enough time to get into my vehicle and flee the scene.

And in another thread people were asking if that certain house on Plantation Ridge just inside the city limits was owned by the people who own the spy store.  The answer is no.

You could also put a gun rack in your truck.

If your attacker gets close enough to use a stun gun or kubaton your tactics are flawed. Exercise the best part about living in a conservative state and arm thyself.

gw812, my friend/co-worker was assaulted in the parking lot across the street from the police department. She started carrying a taser after that.

You misunderstand me. Banking on a close-range weapon ensures that it'll work only at that close range. A handgun, however, can threaten AND be deployed at range.

A taser's a step in the right direction but it's got four drawbacks:
1. The threat's gotta get within range of it (ten-ish feet)
2. Depending on the physiology and amount of drugs the attacker's had the jolt may not do the job
3. Once the attacker is in physical contact with you the taser is useless as you'll receive the shock too
4. For the cost of a one-shot taser you can buy a 16-shot 9MM

Tell her to get a CHL and a weapon. THAT is life insurance.

Been in the situation a few times, I have. I've found the ideal one-two punch for personal protection is a handgun and a good tactical flashlight. The Surefire 6P is my choice, and I've gotten an attachment to the bezel that adds 'teeth' all around it to make it into a good tool to break a car window fast or as a last-ditch defensive weapon. If you catch the Forney Lowes at just the right time you can get this appx. 100.00 flashlight for 50 bucks. Not today though, I just bought the two they had...  ^thumbs  The Z2 is better (what FBI agents use) but it's well over 100.00.
Of course, keeping yourself 'situationally aware' and making good choices about where you go an what you do is the best thing, and when properly used will 99 times out of 100 keep you from having to resort to an aggressive method.
If you want some really interesting ideas about personal protection look up anything from a guy named Masaad Ayoob. Neat reading.

:pics: - Do you have one?
I'm getting this; ---- an expensive flashlight w teeth is good tactical personal protection - after a handgun. You can break car windows w it or use it as a defensive weapon.

My husband and a friend have some of the Surefires.  They sell them at the gun shows, also some other tactical stuff.  He also has one with "teeth".  YIM - ifyou are still interested, I will see what they have and let you know.  I will PM you with info.

You want some pics? You got em!
The pics are my light and a closeup of the teeth. Surefire makes a model with a few teeth built in, but personally it's not near aggressive enough for me. I got the regular 6P LED and bought a 'tactical impact device' from GG&G. About the same price and much more impressive.

If you want to get a 6P for less than MSRP I've got a new one running on eBay right now. Clicky: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280381747875&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT#ht_500wt_975

Thanks for the pic... now i have a good idea of the size and everything. It looks heavy - which I guess is part of the idea of it as personal protection, but kind of small.
I would think you have a nice Ebay deal going if it wasn't for the 'tip' you gave us about getting it at Lowe's (if timed right). Do you GET a lot of "overwhelming negative feedback"? hmmm...

Thanks YMM, I am interested as far as learning, and knowing what is available out there.
I don't necessarily want to own one right now.

I still don't really get what the 'teeth' do for you..... they are just for 'impact' (on someone) mostly? They look rubber, are they hard rubber?

No worries on the Lowes tip. I bought every one they had and just tried to get them to stock transfer over more so the guys in my battalion could have a chance. No joy on it, so safe for eBay. If you get lucky go for it but the people there tell me it'll just be random as to when/if they get any. Last time they had 'em was about a year ago, when I bought mine, so...

For the feedback that's just standard wording. People that get lots of negative feedback tend to get it for a reason and I don't wish to do business with them.

Anyways, the teeth and whole bezel (and whole light) are machined from aluminum. If you need to break a window they focus your force onto a smaller area and effectively increase it. Same with popping someone on the temple with it or using it to dig into a pressure point. The same force applied to a smaller area gets magnified. Gives you more ouch-factor. The light itself is not heavy at all. My setup has a bit more heft in the hand as a Mini-Maglite and the size fits a normal hand perfectly. You want something that will work VERY well, yet still go into your pocket or purse.
