I would imagine if the school buys the property the plans for the redoing of downtown, which were nice, will probably go away as they were.

Honestly they were nice but they were pipe dreams.  We dont have the economy and the draw to pull of that kind of renovation down there.  No private investor in their right mind would spend 2.4 million dollars on that property right now.

It is not the school districts place to renovate downtown,  but if you have the main hub for an expanding district that would provide extra traffic, via the employees that are there and any others that come to the area to do business.  where it may not be their responsibility whats wrong with working together.

If that did work it could maybe help to spur on filling up and renovating the downtown area we have now that is not completely rented out, instead of developing a larger new plan that would just drop at least twice as many places for rent on the market in an area that is not over 90% populated.

It would be nice to see the old school redone and it would be good for a rec center being that the main part of it is still setup like a gymnasium.  Too bad the school district didnt put that on the bond package.

I don't think that old gymnasium even has a floor anymore, to give you an idea. The two ends of the building were renovated (in a sense), but the middle is .... nothing I think. A pit. (It still has a 'stage'  :)) So making it a rec center would be to start from scratch. Probably gut it. Then the exterior would definately need some cosmetic work as well.
School district doesn't own it.

are you talking about the same property that the ISD is wanting to buy for $3 million?

$3 mill to buy ( I think ) AND renovate. Renovation is included the way I read it. I double checked because that is a higher (what I thought was the purchase price) price than what had been quoted in the past for it.

yeah thats what i was talking about.  i had heard 2.4 million and i figured the extra was for renovations.   2.4 or even worse 3 million a private investor isnt gonna do it now or anytime in the foreseeable future.

Has it occured to anyone that this plan is mainly to get FBC out of debt? Is the ISD being a good steward of our tax dollars by purchasing and upgrading it?

I think that Taxpayer is not saying that it is their job to get FBC out of debt...
I think that Taxpayer is saying that coincidentally this plan will get FBC out of debt...
It IS their job to be good stewards of our tax dollars.

If it is really going to get the FBC out of debt???? and there is co-mingling of board members and FBC church members this may need to be looked at more.  especially with a 2.4 million dollar price tag.

Sure that is prime property but for who... and where did the number of 2.4 or 3.8 million come from...  If this really is a ploy to get them out of debt that is really sad, just another way Jesus has been bastardized by men.

So if in fact FBC is in debt, which i dont know to be true, and they have members who are on and involved with the board who is proposing to buy this property, this would have to be a conflict of interest in some way.

taxpayer what is the source of this info

i would be interested to find out exactly what they are using that property for.  I would have a sneaking suspicion they could buy a piece of little less prime property and build a new building for that 3.8 million dollar number.

As old as this town is it is ridiculous to think that there would only be "non-believers" (for the sake of argument) newcomers on the school board.  FBC has been around for generations as have FISD folks.  It would be hard to find members who are not a part of old Forney and invested in the community.  I really find it hard to think that FBC folks are "strong-arming" FISD and getting a sweet deal.  FBC does not set the price for commercial property downtown.

Somewhere in the mix is a commercial realtor who has sold both parties on the price of this property.  There have been many threads talking about just how expensive any commercial property is in downtown Forney.  I can think of a few examples of commercial property in Forney and will cite those examples later and mofify my post.  AreJay,  you have more connections in this area.  Would you please check with your sources and find some commercial properties in Forney so we can compare this proposed figure with what is going on in the market now.  Thank you.

WAY too much speculation being thrown out there.  I can tell you, for a fact, that there are several school board members that are also members of FBC.  In no way does that mean anything shady is going on here.  FISD needs a property, FBC owns a property.  Too many "IF's" involved in this part of the thread.  Until facts and sources are cited, stop speculating.

Asking for more information is not speculating.  There is always an "insider" around here who has more details than the rest of us.  Is this particular property a NEED or a WANT?  What is it about this specific piece of overpriced property?  Are there other properties under consideration INSTEAD of this particular one?

Ok, if they're going to get the property, whatever they put there should be named after Walter Adams. His house was on that property (actually that parking lot there) before the church was built. :D

You're right, asking for more information isn't speculating.  Making a statement like "this plan is mainly to get FBC out of debt" is speculating unless there are some facts and sources to back up the statement.  As the ISD continues to grow in number, the NEED for an alternative campus will grow as well.  You cannot start planning after the fact.  Who says this specific piece of property is overpriced?  It is in a prime location, has a ton of square footage and is in good condition.

BTW, I have my own "insider" info, that's why I would like to see facts/sources rather than conspiracy theories.
