Everyone that wants to control what goes on in the classroom and doesn't want the government involved are living in a fantasy world.  Guess who passed NCLB...the government!  Who mandates that all of our kids take an exit level test in order to move up a grade or graduate...the government!  Who makes the TEKS that every teacher has to follow and makes their lesson plans around...the government!  Whether State or Federal, the government has it's hand in your child's education...because guess what, it's socialized education!  You pay your taxes to the city and state and they turn it over to the schools to provide our kids with a free public education.

Personally I think this just makes conservatives look like a bunch of morons. I can't believe people actually think that our children are going to be brain washed by this speech. Give me a break. This is NOT the first President to address the students of this country & no one made a fuss about it back then. All the conservatives are ready to round up a mob & they DON'T EVEN KNOW what Obama is going to say!!!! Give me a BREAK people!!!  Read the transcript when it comes out on Monday & THEN you can start all of your propaganda.
Maybe people would not have been so upset if the transcript had been put out there first. . . . just a thought.

Also does anybody know the approval rating of each President at the time he was going to address the students?  That could be some fun little trivia.  And just as a reminder when Bush Sr. wanted to speak to students . . . there was an uproar about that by the Democrats. . . . so I'm not so sure why the "liberals" are upset with the "conservatives" . . . they uproared themselves.

OS, that's been answered before...I know this thread is getting long by now, but the Liberals were upset about the money being spent by Bush Sr and not the message.

The school is required to get my permission to allow my child to participate in various other aspects of school . . . . why not this one?

And I know since this thread has gotten so long some of ya'll may have forgotten that I am one of the "conservative" parents that would allow their child to view the speech (I e-mailed the elementary school to find out if they would air the speech live. . the response was no. . . however I did not ask if it would be discussed in class or shown at a later time).

I think this really boils down to parents not trusting politicians with their young, impressionable children (elementary) without them having an outline of the speech . . . . . and honestly I see nothing wrong with that.

Just because it is a "government" school does not mean parents should have no input in this matter . . or any other matter.

I think some people are making a molehill on parents wanting an option.

1991: DEMS BLAST BUSH 41 SCHOOL SPEECH
From the Washington Post, published Friday, October 4, 1991: Democrats assailed the Bush Administration today for spending $26,750 in taxpayer money to hire a production company that oversaw President Bush's telecast from an eighth-grade classroom here to schoolchildren around the country on Tuesday. The money came from the Education Department's salary and expense budget. As a result, Representative William D. Ford, the Michigan Democrat who heads the House Education and Labor Committee, demanded that Education Secretary Lamar Alexander appear before the committee to defend his "spending scarce education dollars to produce a media event." And the House majority leader, Richard A. Gephardt of Missouri, said, "The Department of Education should not be producing paid political advertising for the President." The President's spokesman, Marlin Fitzwater, responded by denying that Mr. Bush's talk to the schoolchildren had been a political event and calling the criticism "nonsense."

IMO I don't think there really is a difference between the two examples.  There are a lot of people who think that this is just so he can further his agenda . . . and to me that would fall into the same category as a "media event".

It would be very interesting to see exactly where the money is coming from to do this "event". . . . boil it down and it is tax money. . . but I wonder what part of the budget.

I'm also thinking that Presidential approval ratings probably have a lot to do with this. . . . I really don't keep up with the #s, but I think I heard somewhere that President Obama's approval rating as been slipping, but I don't know what his rating is compared to other past Presidents.

And in regards to the "message" portion of your post. . . from what I have heard from this board . . please people don't trust him to stay on the message.

Sorry . . . lol . . . it really was a typo . . . I really meant to type people . . . not please.

Gays live in Texas. Go get 'em boys! I hear WFS is their leader.

Sounds like we should work up a number 6 on 'em!

We had those Duncan YO-YO people come to our school and do all those cool tricks, walking the dog, rock the cradle and what not and then we all bought yo-yos after the "demonstration" of course that was the early 70's when kids were impressionable...

... and high. LOL!

Looks like we have a great debate on our hands. Whahoo! Stir, stir.

Guns anyone?

OMG! I sooo remember that! Like yesterday! (Thanks). Wow -- looking back, how did Duncan get a good deal like that to plug their products?
I also remember "Up, Up With People" presentations we all laughed at.
.. and yea KW.. AND High LOL!

Stir, stir... Guns or SMOKING!

I am fine OS, No worries. Hard economic times, but we will endure.
For the record, I oppose politics in school, and did not see a reason for Bush to give a speech to children, and I see no point in Obama doing so now. Argue amongst the adults all they want, but leave the children alone. I don't care if they want to tell the kids not to play with matches, it is the whole presentation of "hi I am a strong and powerful authority figure and you better do as I tell you."

Just as we had protesters running around calling Bush a terrorist, many have strong political views on both sides, and that should not be imposed upon our children. The school is a place for learning, not a battleground for pushing agendas. This nations children are not tools that can be used in some public relations fiasco, and should be left alone.

Just as you have parents teaching their children Bush was a bad man, maybe not directly, but they hear you when you think they are not listening. We have children who also hear their parents complain about Obamas internet security bill, his plans to raise our electric bills and his position on creating a healthcare plan that will be okay for the people but not okay for himself or his family.

Just as you have children that have heard their parents angry about Bush's patriot act and " Bush's oil war", you have children who hear their parents upset about all of the lies in Obamas speeches. Just look at factchck.org yourself, they even have it listed there.

Is it wrong that parents my not want this man to be the one to deliver the message to their children? If he had wanted parents respect, he would have checked all the facts in all of his statements to the people before he said them. there was a time when honesty was used to judge a mans character, that being a person of your word was important. should we show our children role models  that are any less than that?  Presenting him as a role model  To elementary students after he has admittedly been a drug user, and lied on numerous occasions to the public should be at the sole discretion of the child's parents, and not the educational system.
-my 2 cents.

The President's Speech and the Rights of Parents and Students

Because of the concerns that many parents have regarding President Obama's Sept. 8 speech in public schools, FMF is taking action in protecting the rights of parents and students.  We've sent a national media release in order to speak out on the issue and defend anyone whose Constitutional rights are violated.  In addition to the U.S. Constitution, there is also specific Texas law protecting the rights of parents to opt their children out of instruction or activities which they oppose.

I'll decide what's best for my kids, thank you.

The original message put out by the White House -- regarding the content -- has changed SO much after people started questioning it all.

I did my part my calling and writing both the Principal of our school & the Superintendant.

Fear - this is the strongest human emotion.  That is what this is about.

It is because of this type of right-wing propaganda and fear mongering that I have left and turned my back on the Republican Party.  I am a strict independent now.  Let's be real.  They do not care that he is talking to school age children.  They did it in 1991.  This was a political opportunity to fan the flames of fear that they have lit.

Just as the libs looked a few years ago, the Republicans now look like a bunch of whiny sissys latching on to anything they can muster, whether it has merit or not, in their struggle to regain POWER.

In an interesting news article, the former First Lady approves the speech.
