Travel to Europe
« on: November 28, 2009, 09:52:02 pm »
Hello everyone, I wanted to get this information out to everyone in the community.  The school board in Forney will not allow teachers to offer student travel to our students through the school.  So, I was told to put an advertisement in the paper.  The Forney Post agreed to write an article about what is upcoming, and I was told this is also a great place to reach lots of people.  I am a teacher at North Forney High School, and I am taking a group of students (parents welcome too) to Dublin, Ireland, London, England, Paris, France, and the beaches of Normandy in the summer of 2011.  We have an informational meeting upcoming soon, but feel free to reply or email me directly at stevemorrow@att.net if you are interested and would like more information...

I did this same thing eons ago when I was in high school through Scholastic International.  We went on a six week tour and visited many of the same places you are planning on going to. My only regret at the time was that I hadn't paid much attention in school in social studies classes so I couldn't fully appreciate some of the places we had visited.  I hope you get a bunch of kids who are really motivated to go and who have at least "brushed up" on their history/social studies classes and can get a lot more out of the trip than I did.  ^thumbs

I hear you there.  The main reason we plan so far in advance is to try and touch on and cover more about the regions we visit so it means more.  I just returned from this exact trip in June, and I must say visiting Omaha Beach was one of the most incredible experiences in my life.  Experiencing the culture first hand rather than just teaching about it was pretty awesome too!

The time and date is now set for our meeting.  We will be having an informational meeting on Monday, December 7th at 7:00 PM at the Best Western Christopher Inn & Suites in Forney.  It is the new hotel located at 752 Pinson Road.  This meeting will discuss departure dates, prices, destinations of travel, and any other questions you might have.  The trips we have set up are set to increase in price by $200 on December 15th, which is why we want to get this information out to all parents and community members as soon as possible.

Will other adults be there to help you watch over the kids?  Are other teachers going?  If so, do you know which teachers are planning to attend the trip?

The company we are using allows one teacher chaperone per 6 students/parents that sign up.  There are several teachers interested in participating right now.  Ms. Ochoa is the next teacher that will go if there are 12 signed up.  Ms. Salgado is taking a group of kids to Spain in a separate trip, but she will be at the meeting on December 7th as well to discuss her trip.  Coach Curtis is the next teacher in line and so on...it all depends on the number of people that attend.

I wish you lots of luck with this! I went to Italy with my Latin teacher when I was in HS. It was an awesome vacation. We went over Easter so we even got to see the Pope (I am not religious but hey... he is still an influential person lol). My favorite part was Capri. I am not a fan of being the odd man out but if I was going to travel again to Italy... it would be for Capri. Venice has NOTHING on Capri!

So, your son will be just completing 8th grade as of the summer of 2011, correct?  If so, I would need to get to know your son a bit and make a personal decision.  It is a great responsibility to take kids over to another continent.  There will be no other kids his age on the trip, do you think he would be okay with that?  Will you and your son be at the meeting on Monday?
