I knew someone would bring this up sooner or later...
Yes - It's been established Biz, that eating small meals during the day - (they say up to 6!) DOES keep your metabolism up. It's the recommended healthy way to go about weight loss and you have 'energy' to work out then too.
I would say in Heather's case-- the Protein shakes are making those little 'meals' and should be working to keep her metabolism going. Just like a SlimFast or any of those liquid diet plans... but better. (They put stupid unneccesary calories in those things)

Fasting WILL slow that metabolism down.. your bodies' saying "Hey - wait a minute here.. I'm not getting anything, your trying to starve me!" and it will lower it's calorie/fat burning (metabolism) to 'save' itself.. like a thermostat.
So.... it doesn't work real well for very long... I would say it varies for each individual. You'll see when you hit a 'stall', and you might as well stop fasting.
But for me at least, by then, my stomach feels like it has 'shrunk' and it acts like an appetite suppresent for me.. takes a LOT less food to get full if you eat slow and listen to your body.
Once you start eating like a normal person again I would say that 1/3 to even 1/2 can 'pop' back on... but your still down 1/2..
For me at least a fast lasts like 3 to 5 days,  then off it for a week or until I feel like doing it again. Keep in mind that if I'm REAL hungry - I WILL still eat a little, w healthy choices, but then I'm not doing protein either.

I will say that a "cleansing" fast is a common practice in many religions... and I don't see anything wrong with it. They usually last 3 days - unless it's a monk or something!

I also want to say that this is my personal deal for now... so if any doctors or youth are reading this ----please ignore!----. I'm not advocating this for anyone. I only decided on this because I am too lazy to work out the shopping, counting, and technicalities for a REAL diet, and it has worked for me in my younger days.

The basic science of weight loss - no matter how you go about it - is still, and always will be; consume less calories than you use - Period.

Thanks for the insight.  My issue is I've gained about 10 lbs since I started going to school full time, working full time...being mom...blah blah blah.  Now that I'm out of school it's time to get back the way I've been my entire life.

Most of my calories came from Cokes, Coffee (starbucks) b/c of the above...NO SLEEP.  I would usually only eat lunch.  So now, I need to replace all those nasty calories with good calories that will work for me...not against me....and go back to working out like I used too.

This is my first time to try to lose weight in my entire life.  I've always been a size zero or one...I'm up to a 3/4...don't you guys yell at me either...you have to remember I am 5'1 and have always been small...I don't mind the 3/4 size...I mind being flabby and not being toned.  I used to teach dance and was lucky enough to maintain that all through adulthood and even having kids....I will be 38 in a couple of weeks...and I want to be nice and healthy before I hit 40!!

By the way...I just finished a bean burito from Taco Bell...just left NFHS basketball game and headed straight to the border!!  Oh...and a small Pepsi...gotta have a treat once in a while...right?

Got one degree in general legal...taking a break to decide whether to continue with legal/law or just go into foresnic psychology....I've also been working hard to try to get a promo at work so it's a good thing I'm out of school right now.  I do miss school but I LOVE the time I have to spend with the kids and do things like workout and CLEAN MY HOUSE...LOL

What is Zumba?  Is it like Salsa or something?  I need to see if my gym buddy would like to do it...at best we can laugh at each other right?  Do you go?

The break from school sounds like it's time is due......
Enjoy!
Forensic psychology sounds more exciting to me.... and it's not JUST into it....
It's a legitimate lofty goal!

Here's a Zumba clip I chose because it's more 'real' and fun to watch ... though the girl demonstrating it is crazy good at it...
your a dancer from way back - s/b easier for you!
The latest fitness 'dance' craze.
Probably helps if you like Latin music.

Hahahah.. well, beginning Zumba is way tamer and s l o w e r than that!
But it IS all Latin or latin-influenced music .... and involves "hip circles".
It's supposed to be something --everyone-- can do - they say.
(Not high impact at all)

Did you check the guy in the lime green pants? He keeps up really well doesn't he?
Did you see the lady in the background in the black and white long dress?-- ok -- that is me! Hahaha  ;D

I also break up my fasts. By Saturday I was down 9.5 lbs however I broke my fast for a dinner (Tim cooked for my dad's g/f) so as of Sunday morning I was down 7.5 lbs. I am hoping for my week I will be at -9.5 Monday morning. If I was Busy I would be at goal, but alas I gotta manage that about 11 more times to be happy lol

YIM as soon as my stall hits I am switching to Atkins. I have always done very well on Atkins its just been hard for me to get into the swing of it for some reason. This fasting should put me in a  better frame of mind to do the diet once the fasting no longer does the job. Then when I hit a stall with Atkins I will hit up low calorie diet and then hit back onto the fasting train and rotate through until I have my body throughly confused lol ;)  When I am off the fast I will go to a more rigorous workout routine. Even while fasting I am thinking of incorporating some walking. Nothing strenuous at all. Like 20 min at 2.5  :P Just something that says... I did something

Week One - down 4 pounds....I think it's mostly water weight that I've lost but it's weight!!

By the way...I bought the Sketcher's Shape Ups...I wasn't even a block away and my calves burned...I rounded the duck pond and my hamstrings were burning...in front of the middle school my butt was cramping...by Blackburn my legs were numb.  I certainly felt more burn in my legs wearing the Shape Ups than regular shoes.

It still took me 45 mins to do four miles...but I hope to get better time to burn more.  Guess I'll be walking on the days I'm not at the gym...today was so pretty I really didn't want to be stuck in the gym...awesome day for a walk!!
