Camera -- Fuji S1500
« on: July 03, 2009, 01:36:26 PM »
Took my Cannon PowerShot A85 in to have it repaired.  I don't know the technical term of the part, but the guy said it was the "pupil" of the camera. . . . it has gone out.  I went to Garland Camera on Northwest Highway. . . . he said it would have to be sent in to the manufacturer because he does not do that type of repair and it would probably be about $85 - 90.

I will have to say I am totally bummed, because I am really into repairing things and making them last. . . . but apparently that is not cost effective because I could get a camera that has more mega pixels for what it would cost me to fix my current camera which has 4.0 mega pixels and 3x zoom.

I have been wanting to upgrade my camera . . . so I guess now is the time.

So while I was in that camera shop he showed me some cameras and I liked the Fuji S1500 10 mg 12 zoom.

I really enjoy taking pictures, have a pretty good eye (well at least friends tell me my pics are nice), but am definitely an amateur. . . but would like to get a little more serious about photography.

I definitely want more zoom than 3x . . . I'm thinking the 12x would be enough.  I like taking pictures of flowers and insects so definitely want a macro.   When dd is cooperative I love taking pics of her with our dogs.  What I liked about the Fuji S1500 is that it had a panoramic option, with a ghost image so that you could line up the photo. . . something like that would have come in handy when I went to the Grand Canyon and Zion National Park!  Back then I was using a Minolta X-370 (can anyone say ancient!)

And something new that I learned they have different settings . . . settings for taking pics of fireworks, sunsets, etc.  Is that something that all digital cameras have now?  I what is a "portrait" setting?

Here is a spec sheet of the camera that I looked at:

http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/S1500FD/S1500FDA.HTM

As far as brands go . . . is there a brand that has less problems. . . . . I'm wanting a durable, long lasting camera. . . . I'm not the type of person that likes to upgrade every few years so I am wanting something that will last a long time.

Also at Garland Camera if you buy a camera you get some free classes where they explain the different features of the camera.  Is that standard . . . do other camera stores offer that?

One more thing. . . what is a good speed for taking action pics . . . . like how many pics in a second.  We went to camp a couple of weeks ago and the guy taking pics for us had a camera that shot alot of pics really fast . . . . the kids were going down a water slide so he was able to get several shots in just a matter of seconds.

Does the Fuji do that?

I'm thinking that might be a feature I want. . . . DH and DD (and me sometimes) enjoy mountain biking and I might want to take some pics of them going over some jumps or coming down some slopes, sloshing through creek beds, etc.  It might come in handy for sports with dd, too.

okay. . . what do ya'll think of buying cameras on-line

http://www.digitalcamera-hq.com/digital-cameras/sony-s1500_reviews.html

The camera store had it listed for $229

It looks like I would save $50. . . . but I would not get the classes. . . plus at that particular store they would sell me a card that was $19.99  for $9.99

Taxes should be used for NEEDS not wants.  You WANT something extra/special pay for it yourself, don't share the burden with other homeowners.  Why should people's taxes be so high and unaffordable?

Hey OS, I have the Fuji S1000 and love it.  I really wanted a much fancier camera but DH wouldn't go for it.  I've taken what I consider good shots and as soon as I actually read the manual, maybe I'll get even better.  I'm guessing that the Fuji S1500 would be an excellent choice.

I am so EXCITED!

I researched further into repairing my camera.  Come to find out Cannon had done a service alter/bulletin in regards to the issue that I was having with my camera.  Got the news today that they have repaired my camera for FREE!

Now I have more time to save up some money and get a really nice camera!
