Because the funds from the parks district is controlled by the parks district board, not the city board. Only a percentage of the funds in the parks district would be used towards Community Park, Mulberry, Hurricane, Eastside, and the other city parks. The parks district board gets to decide how much and where the money is spent.

Its seems OS that you are assuming that all 100% of the money goes to the city parks department, which it doesn't. Remember the parks district board gets to set a master plan for the parks district and will set funds for that etc. which has NOTHING to do with the city parks. The parks district is expected to contribute some to the city parks only because people in the parks district (primarily youth sports families) use them, but its not going to take 100% of the money. The percentage/amount will be determined by your board, not our city board.

You are so naive. . . . you expect me to believe that . . . after the City of Forney spent whatever they spent (50,000 to 75,000 . . these are the two #s that I have found in my search) for a lobbyist to go to Austin to get the House Bill that allows for the creation of this "new parks district".

And if "my" board sets the amount . . . why is the city/parks board throwing out numbers for the tax rate . . . . telling people at a parks board meeting that the rate will be low. . . that there will be expansion outside the city limits. . . . if you ask me . . . it sounds like they are driving the bus . . . . . not non-citizens.

Yeah . . right . . . the City of Forney "legislates" for something they have no way to control.   If what you say is correct. . . . theoretically speaking then this new district wouldn't have to give any money towards the City's park plan . . . . and the city spent $$$s on a lobbyist for that?

I don't fault you for being so naive. . . . you have never lived through a special taxing district . . . so you have absolutely no clue how they work.  I assure you that the City of Forney will have a very big say in who gets put on that board, they will have a very big say in the drawing up of any plans. . . . even if the board members are to reside outside the city limits and within the FISD boundaries . . . it will be nothing but a bunch of "Yes" men who want to finish, supplement. . . whatever word you want to use. . the parks within the city limits of Forney.

Have you even read House Bill 4789. . . . I don't get any say in regards to board members until the year 2011 . . . by that time contracts, plans, etc. will already be set in motion . . . ask Josh and Laura(who both serve on the boards of special districts) how that works.

I don't mean to be rude . . . but change a few names here and there. . . City of Forney/Parks Board to Leman. . . . Mesa (offering to get the petition done)  to WMF homeowners that supported Leman. . . . and it sounds like WMF the Sequel.

Taxes should be used for NEEDS not wants.  You WANT something extra/special pay for it yourself, don't share the burden with other homeowners.  Why should people's taxes be so high and unaffordable?

Actually MESA did not offer to get the petition done. Jeff Fudge and Nate Dettmer offered to promote it since we believe it is best for the families involved in MESA. But MESA (the organization) is not taking a political stance on this. I hope I make that clear? Jeff Fudge and Nate Dettmer helped in collecting signatures etc. for the petition, so please do not lump the organization with it.

oh that is better. . . . I know where you live . . . . where does Jeff Fudge live inside/outside city limits.

And if you did not want it viewed as Mesa taking a political stance . . . it probably should not have been at sotfball registration.

I don't mean for this to come across as rude (always hard to read tone online), but more than once Nate has been called naive.  Not sure why people have to start with insults on these situations?  Yes, I feel like calling someone who VOLUNTEERS their time, gets involved and researches the subject matter and talks with informed people naive is an insult.  We may not all agree, but I don't feel like Nate and Gonzo are naive because they believe in this district.  People in WMF have been burned, we get it.  You have every right to be more skeptical and refuse to ever be a part of this type of district again.  But, you aren't dealing with a lying developer here.  You are dealing with many people who genuinly care about the community as a whole.

For the record, I have tried to keep an open mind throughout this and when it was first introduced I was pro district.  After listening to some very valid arguments from OS, BigC and others, I am now more on the fence and waivering between the tax and the user fees.  There is no need to make this into a war between "city dwellers" and "those on the outside".  Vote your conscience, inform those that ask and the rest will take care of itself.

I so disagree with that statement.

If the people that started things rolling had really cared . . . . they would have reached outside the community and had "communities meetings" . . . . . but they did not.

I probably would feel totally different if people that lived in this proposed district had started everything. . . . . but the only people I'm hearing about in relation to this matter live within the city limits.  The lobbyist was hired to represent the City of Forney. . . . not the community. . . . not Kaufman County.

It is funny that when raising taxes is involved . . . they only want to tell you about the upside or the "pros" . . . . they never disclose the "cons" . . . . . I guess that is what people like me are for.

Nate . . . sorry if I insulted you using the word naive . . . but I just don't feel you truly understand the ramifications of what a special district does to those that live in it and I don't think the "the informed people" are telling you the whole story.

No one is even addressing the fact that the economy sucks and people are not paying their property taxes . . . and why in the world are they putting this to a vote in an economic climate like now?

Absolutely.  That is not the question.  The issue is one of field access and getting as many kids as possible that access, while trying to balance all the various demands.  The model for Forney baseball works quite well.  You create a league that offers as many kids as possible a chance to play.  If you want to play in a different league, for whatever reason, then you are always free to do so.  However, the City will likely only make accomodations for the one league they have the facilties to provide.

Essentially, Forney has outgrown the Jackrabbits and Longhorns.  Those two orgs can't provide enough spots for the # of kids that want to play.  A City League can and should.

I agree.....most of these power house highschool teams have a great city league for their kids which allows them to learn their playbook at an early age and when they get to highschool its all second nature to the them...

Its "easy" to support a special taxing district when you wont be the one living in it. Its kind of like saying... sure build a garbage dump site by XYZ when I live in area ABC. When it doesnt affect you its easy to push for it.

Cowboy, I just saw this as I haven't paid attention to this thread lately. I have also called Nate and Gonzo naive in this thread and in the SB. I didn't mean it to be an insult, I really didn't. I love Gonzo and I think Nate is an awesome guy. He reminds me of how I used to be before I got involved in youth sports in Forney. In fact, I stated in the SB that I wish I was more like him.

I apologize to both Gonzo and Nate if I offended you. It was not my intention.

You know, it's an internet message board.  I hope no one is losing a lot of sleep due to these conversations.  I know that it wasn't malicious or anything.  I just know that they are both very involved with youth sports and aren't speaking blindly about these subjects.  These are both big( ;D) boys and I'm sure they can speak for themselves.  I doubt their feeling were too hurt (although I might be a little naive about that....Nate listens to Miley Cirus and Gonzo...well...just look at the shoes).

I have pretty thick skin, to go along with my thick gut and backside.  I don't get offended easy.  I understand where Cowboy was coming from and I appreciate it, but I also understand where you were coming from, Katie.

And to be honest, I am a little naive on this.  Perhaps, trusting or optimistic is a little better phrase.  I truly believe MOST people want to do the right thing.  Until they have burned me, I tend to not look on the cynical side.  However, once you burn me (or sometimes I have to be burned twice), then I can be as cynical as the next person.  I am just not there yet with this entire issue.  I do believe most involved want what it best for the kids.

I for one am completely offended and I'll never talk to anyone on this board again! ;)

LOL, seriously though, I'm much like Gonzo, it takes a bit more than that to hurt my feelings. I think Gonzo hit it right on the head, we are both more trusting and optimistic towards the city perhaps than others. Those of you who've met me know, you are my friend until you burn me, and so far I haven't been burnt by those at the city currently.
