Anybody have advice for New Orleans trip in August?
« on: July 29, 2011, 04:05:30 PM »
The wife and I are taking a trip in the middle of August without the kiddos.  Anyone have suggestions, recommendations, or referrals for things to do, see, and eat?  We'll be staying in or near the French Quarter.

JJ,
New Orleans is the BOMB!!! It's such a great walking city. Just walk, walk and pop in to any of the numerous little shops, hallway sized bars, and restaurants. My must eat at restaurants are Antoines and Pascal's Manale. To die for food!!!

I usually avoid the really touristy places like Bubba Gump Shrimp and K-Paul's. Overrated. If you are staying in the French Quarter, Pascal's Manale is a short streetcar ride, then a 3 block walk. It's lovely.

If you are an architecture buff, try one of the Garden District walking tours.

Cafe du Monde is touristy, but you can't miss it. It's the best place to nurse your hangover in the morning with some beignets and Cafe au Lait.

This is the best city for people watching. I could spend a whole afternoon on a Bourbon Street balcony just watching people.
Then there is the partying on Bourbon Street, just a blast. Live music, walking up and down the street with your to go cup. I have to warn you...Bourbon Street is dirty, smelly, rowdy, loud and raunchy. I LOVE IT but it's an acquired taste. :-) New Orleans doesn't try to gloss over it's slutty side like my hometown of Vegas does. It just lays it out there. LOL

Have fun, I am jealous. It's my favorite place to go.

Cafe du Monde is the BOMB!  I don't care how touristy it is, the beignets are the best thing in the world.  Just awesome.  And yes, even better with a hangover.

My opinion, go to foodtv.com and search for the places Guy Fieri has featured on Diner's, Drive-ins and Dives.  Several New Orleans places he has been to that just look unreal.

Nope.. no advice. ... Except for; be sure and check out some authentic dixieland jazz while you're there.

I was there for ONE helluva night - pre-Katrina. During Mardi Gras.
I can't tell you the names of the places we went to, or all the things I saw.
I saw a lot, ate a lot and drank a lot - it's all a blur.

But I DO know I had one of the BEST times ever!

I have a hurricane glass from a place called O'Reilly's or Pat O'Reilly or something. It was nice. At night.
I seem to remember a 'Square' I enjoyed the next day... I forgot the name of.

I really really 'saw' a lot of stuff! :P

(Just look out for big ass crazy guys bumping everyone out of the way... then turning on you w a knife as happened to Rich Smith on Bourbon Street from front page of Forney Messenger a week or two ago.)
I do remember cops are pretty tolerant of things... someone has to really be doing something for them to get involved.

Thanks guys.  I've been to New Orleans during Mardi Gras, but that consuming alcohol and throwing women beads.  I had a great time, but this trip is totally different.

Cafe Du Monde is one of my priorities!  Thank you guys for the other tips.  Katie, this is exactly how we're expecting the trip to go.  Get up, walk around, see the sites, ride the street cars, experience the food, enjoy the architecture, see some shops, and in the evening have a couple of drinks listening to some music.

We're going for two days and we're staying off of Canal and Decatur.  We'll definitely get to try at least one of those two restaurants.  "COOLinary New Orleans - Celebrating Dining in America's Most Delicious City!" is the cities August theme with tons of restaurants participating.  Pascals and Antoines are both participating.

Keep the tips coming!  I've been researching foodtv, travel channel, and other websites, but first hand referrals from people I know are preferred!  I'm super excited, because I'm a huge history buff, and there is plenty of that in New Orleans.

What about touring cemetaries.  My mom had articles about different ones and I think she had some stuff about New Orleans -- not sure though.  She always thought it was interesting reading the markers.

Not sure.. but I thought a bunch of those got washed out during the flood since they are above ground.
Maybe have been replaced.. but with original tombs and markers? - don't know.
Doubt it.

............ and i do know that's not the kind of trip you were wanting to do Warez, but just the fact you're going brought back those hazy fun memories.
Thanks for the trip back!
I want to go again someday to do it the way y'all are doing.

We used to live down there. It depends on what you want to do. A lot of people like to do the tours. Some of it still is in disrepair. I believe the 9th ward (which you want no part of anyway lol) is still a sinking ship.

Obviously Bourbon St is a must.  Hurricanes are a must. Since you have been down for Mardi Gras you know all about them :-P I actually do not enjoy N.O during Mardi Gras... I like crowds but that is even too much for moi!  And even when its not Mardi Gras you still get the flashers and the bead tossers lol.

I bet you have a blast no matter what you end up doing!
