Heavener Runestone State Park in OK
« on: March 07, 2008, 05:48:25 PM »
OK, I'm not sayin', I'm just SAYIN'

Here's this perfectly gorgeous little state park about halfway up Oklahoma's east border.  And it has in it, among cliffs and forest and other great stuff, a rock the size of a school bus incised with ancient Nordic runes.

This is not an official website, but it tells all the stuff I like about the place:

http://www.shareyourstate.com/oklahoma/runes.htm

The first time we went there, the stone was just out there in the woods, the way it has been for --- well, a long time.  Now it's encased in a pretty little building, along with some other interesting information.  It's not the only runestone in Oklahome, but it's the most impressive.

I mean, you think Oklahoma is such a nice, normal state with nice normal people, and then you find something like this.  Were ancient Vikings really exploring in the Kiamichi wilderness?  Check it out!  The view from the car park alone is worth the trip!

It's a beautiful walk from the parking area to the Stone, almost worth the trip by itself.   ^thumbs
