Wi-Five troubled for next day or so
« on: July 31, 2009, 05:28:28 pm »
Joe from Wi-Five let me know they're experiencing hardware issues and internet service should be painfully slow for the next day, or so.

So, if you can actually get to this message, now you know why it took you so long.

LOL, love it. Sorry to hear about the Internet woes, I know how frustrating slow Internet can be - I have Connextions!  ;D

I'm surprised you haven't switched to Wi-Five yet.  I'm seriously considering it. :scratchchin:

I should've updated this posting.   A few hours after I posted it my speeds went Mazda...Zoom Zoom.    I guess they fixed the hardware issue much earlier than anticipated.   It's nice to go fast...again.

Y'know, I considered switching too. Changed my mind after this conversation with the person on the phone:

Me - "Your service looks really good, but that installation fee is really steep. What does it cover?"
Them - "Well, we put in the transceiver and antenna, and wire it up to your router."
Me - "Yeah, I get that, but two to three hundred dollars? Am I buying the transceiver from you or something?
Them - "No, we still own it. You rent it from us. It's in your fees."
Me- "Wow. Okay, so what does that install charge cover?"
Them - "Well, it's expensive for the antenna and the mast for it."
Me - "That shouldn't be an issue. I've got a mast already on the side of my house already (shh, don't tell Ashlea) so that's covered. It's tall enough to be pretty good."
Them - "Well, you have to have line of sight to our tower!"
Me - "Looks like everyone else around me's doing okay to your tower with the antenna sitting on their roofs. I should be just fine. Considering that shouldn't you be able to do something about that big charge?"
Them - "No, it's a complicated process to install the system."
Me - <deep breath> "So, I won't be owning the transceiver, I already have the perfect mounting point, I already have a router, I have three grades of coax in my garage the installer could choose from to use, I have a battery backup for the transceiver right at the coax entry point to my house, and I even have a signal strength meter sitting on my desk the installer could use...
So, all your costs consist of here are the antenna, 30 minutes of labor, and the gas to get here, and you will still charge me up to three hundred dollars and no less than 190.00?"
Them - "Yes, sir."
Me - "Thanks. Bye bye, now"

That install charge is ridiculous. Straight out. It's the same workload as a satellite TV install and you get that for less than 50.00 and usually free. If they would get competitive about that I'd be all over them.

I've considered the install fee and that's the only reason we haven't switched yet.  However, the current service we have sucks worse than any internet service I have ever had.  I get get a better internet experience on my iphone.  That said, it's worth it to me.

LOL, isn't that the truth, WFS? Kinda sad when a cell phone has better Internet access than the fiber optic line to our homes.

We still haven't switched either, primarily due to the install fee. That's a lot of money in this economy. However, I dream of a day when we drop all of Connextions services (cable/Internet/phone) and stop giving them our money.

I still have an irrational fear of wireless Internet, as well. I've mentioned before that I started up a company that provided specialized wi-fi-based services, so I know how it works, how reliable it is, etc., but there's something in my subconscious that just keeps saying "but there's no wires!!! It's not going to work and you'll have no Internet access!"

:lmao: Now Josh, you better get with this wireless movement.  Almost everything is going wireless.  I do graphics for the building controls business and they are now getting into wireless thermostats in commercial buildings.  I think it's freaking awesome!  If I were an Electrical contractor I'd be a little worried about my future though. :willy:

I've had them for about 6 months.  Works great for me.  Switched over from the wireless co in Rockwall tho, so I have like zero expectations.

I never thought I'd say this, but I did have a good experience with Connextions the other day. I measured my speeds for a couple of weeks and saw that I was getting half of my posted speeds for my account. I called them and told them to either rectify it or cut my bill in half. The chick that answered talked to a tech in the switch and had him "unplug and replug me back in". Magically, my speeds were instantly at the limit of my account. Try it, Josh, it might help you...

We have had terrible service from Wi-five for the past 3 months and now our service is up and down randomly. Over 15 messages left for sales, billing, and tech support with no return calls whatsoever. Is there any live people that work for Wi-five? So much for 24 hour tech support...all you get is a voice mailbox that never gets returned.

Not a happy camper with Wi-Five and I thought Texas Broadband was bad....

Are you sure you're calling the right number?  I always get return phone calls and return emails in a very reasonable amount of time.  Sometimes almost immediately.

There are 2 #s on the invoice:

1. Billing questions : 866-804-9035
2. Support questions: 469-261-8597

Calling #2 gets you a message to call #1.  Call #1 and you get 3 options: Press 1 for billing, 2 for sales, or 3 for tech support.  Choose any option and all I have gotten for the last 10 days is a VM box that no one ever returns.  If you have a number you have been using I would love to have it.  Post or PM me please.  Right now I am getting modem speed only...
